Corten Steel vs Mild Steel

When it comes to choosing the perfect edging material for your garden or landscape project, Corten steel and mild steel both offer distinct advantages. Understanding the differences between these options can help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and preferences.

Corten Steel Edging:

  1. Weathering Properties: Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, develops a unique rust-like patina over time when exposed to the elements. This natural weathering process not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also forms a protective layer that enhances its resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for outdoor applications.

  2. Rustic Aesthetic: The rusted appearance of Corten steel lends a rustic charm to garden landscapes, complementing natural surroundings and adding a touch of character to outdoor spaces.

  3. Durability: Despite its rustic appearance, Corten steel is highly durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions, making it suitable for long-term use in outdoor environments.

  4. Higher Cost: Corten steel edging typically comes at a higher initial cost compared to mild steel due to its unique properties and aesthetic appeal.

Mild Steel Edging:

  1. Affordability: Mild steel edging is often more budget-friendly compared to Corten steel, making it an attractive option for cost-conscious consumers or large-scale landscaping projects.

  2. Customization: Mild steel is highly malleable, allowing for easy customization and shaping to fit the specific contours of your garden beds or pathways. This flexibility in design makes mild steel edging a versatile choice for various landscaping applications.

  3. Paintable Finish: Unlike Corten steel, mild steel does not naturally develop a protective patina. However, it can be coated or painted to enhance its resistance to rust and corrosion, as well as to achieve the desired aesthetic finish.

  4. Strength: While not as resistant to corrosion as Corten steel, properly treated mild steel can still offer sufficient durability and strength for most garden edging applications.

Corten Steel Edging is ideal for those seeking a durable, weather-resistant material with a rustic aesthetic, while mild steel edging offers affordability, flexibility, and customization options. Consider your budget, aesthetic preferences, and maintenance requirements when choosing between Corten steel and mild steel edging for your landscaping project. Both options provide excellent functionality and can enhance the beauty of your outdoor space when used appropriately.

Installation:

Recommended Equipment:

  1. Mallet/Hammer: Use with a block of wood to avoid damaging the steel during installation.
  2. Stakes: Included with the edging for anchoring purposes.
  3. Steel Rings: Also included with the edging to facilitate the 'Zip Lock' system.
  4. Angle Grinder: Optional for cutting corners or adjusting lengths.
  5. String Line and Spirit Level: Use to check levels and ensure straight edges.
  6. Gloves and Eye Protection: Safety first! Protect yourself during installation.
  7. Spade: Use to create channels in the ground for the edging to sit in.
  8. Lawn Mower or Edger: Optional for defining a path before installing the edging.

Installation Process:

  1. Use the 'Zip Lock' system: Drive a stake through the interlocking steel rings welded onto each end of the strip to pull the pieces together and anchor the edging to the ground securely.
  2. Positioning: Place each welded ring and ground spike every 500mm along the length of the strip to ensure adequate support and stability.
  3. Bury at least 1/3 of the height of the edging into the ground for extra stability. Use a spade to create channels in the ground for the edging to sit in comfortably.
  4. Shaping and Curving: Bend the steel edging to your desired shape to create shifting shapes and curves. The ground spikes will maintain the shape you form.
  5. Cutting for Harder Angles: Use an angle grinder to cut the edging to the desired length for harder angles, such as 90° corners. Place the cut pieces together to form the corner.
  6. Additional Tips: Be mindful of possible obstructions under the soil and wet the area if the soil is hard to facilitate installation.
