Scaffolding Stillages

HERMEQ's scaffolding stillages and storage equipment hold scaffold boards, tube, couplers and base plates in the yard, on site and on the lorry between them. Post stillages and tube stackers keep scaffold tube stacked and off the ground. Steel fitting bins, often bought alongside stillages, hold couplers and other fittings for storage and transport. Solid steel crane lift goods carrying cages move materials across a site by crane or forklift. The range also covers solid and mesh storage bins, post pallets, chute front pallets and a foldable wire mesh pallet cage for the small parts and mixed loads a scaffold contract produces.

Scaffolding stillages, tube stackers and bins

The range splits by what is stored: long lengths go on open frames, and loose parts go in enclosed bins and cages that keep them together for counting and moving.

Post stillages

Post stillages, which the trade also calls scaffold stillages or post pallets, are the standard frame for scaffold tube and boards. Corner posts and a reinforced central bar hold long lengths in an orderly stack, so tube is not left lying in mud and standing water. Choose them for the bulk of the tube on a job and for boards that need to stay flat and sorted by length.

Tube stackers

Tube stackers, known on most yards as U stackers, are open U-shaped frames made for standard scaffold tube. They hold tube in layers with support at each end that stops it rolling. They suit sorting tube by length within a yard, or keeping a smaller quantity in order on a site where a full stillage is more than the job needs.

Steel fitting bins

A steel fitting bin, or stillage bin, is the open-topped box that couplers and other scaffold fittings go into once they come off the tube. Steel fitting bins are the usual companion to post stillages, with the tube in the stillage and its couplers in the bin beside it. Choose them wherever fittings are stored and moved as one load.

Solid and mesh steel storage bins

The larger cube bins come in two builds. Solid steel storage bins are general storage for fittings and materials in the yard, the warehouse and industrial premises as well as on site. Mesh fitting bins suit bulky materials that need to be reached easily and checked quickly during stock control.

Vinnie bin

The Vinnie bin is the largest bin in the range, made for bulk quantities of tube and fittings together, along with other industrial stock. It suits a yard or a large contract where mixed scaffold materials arrive and leave in volume and one container is simpler to handle than several smaller ones.

Post pallets with a solid base

Post pallets with a solid base pair corner posts with a steel floor, so goods that would drop through an open frame sit on a flat deck. Choose them for boxed components, bagged items and short materials that need a floor beneath them but no enclosed sides, in a store where floor space is tight.

Chute front pallets

Chute front pallets are small steel containers with an open front, made for stores and work areas where components are picked by hand without emptying the container. In scaffold storage they hold base plates, small parts and the loose fittings a gang reaches for most often.

Foldable wire mesh pallet cages

The foldable wire mesh pallet cage is a galvanised, collapsible cage with a reinforced base. Choose it for mixed loads and boxed stock that travel back and forth between sites and the yard, and the wider choice of cages is under wire mesh pallet cages.

Crane lift goods carrying cages

Crane lift goods carrying cages, often called goods cages or crane cages, are solid steel cages built to be lifted by crane and moved by forklift. They are the type to choose when fittings, tools or materials go up to a working level or across a site by crane.

Stillages or pallet cages

The choice turns on the shape of what is stored. An open post stillage holds tube, boards and other long lengths that load from the side and only need to be kept off the ground and in an orderly stack, and its open sides let a forklift driver or a scaffolder see at once how much is left. Couplers, base plates and small parts need an enclosed bin or cage, because they would fall through an open frame or scatter across the yard each time the load is moved.

Among the enclosed types, the next choice is between solid and mesh sides. Solid sides hold the smallest fittings, pins and fixings that could work through a mesh, and keep the contents out of sight in a shared yard. Mesh sides let rain drain through, so water does not collect in the base of a bin left outside, and they show the contents at a glance during a stock check.

Stacking, folding and lifting steel stillages

Stackable stillages and collapsible cages

How empties come back decides how much lorry deck and yard space a return takes. Post stillages stack directly on top of one another on their square feet, in the yard and on the lorry, so a run of returned stillages occupies the floor area of one. The foldable wire mesh pallet cage collapses flat when empty. Fixed bins, including the fitting bins, the storage bins and the Vinnie bin, do not fold and travel back at their full size, which suits stores that stay in one place for the life of a job.

Forklift and crane handling

Stillages, post pallets and bins move around the yard and on and off the lorry by forklift. A load that goes up to a working level or over a site by crane goes in a crane lift goods carrying cage, which is made for crane lifting and carries a marked safe working load (SWL), with options up to 3000 kg across the range. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, lifting operations are planned by a competent person, and lifting equipment and accessories, including the cage itself and its chains or slings, are thoroughly examined by a competent person at set intervals with the results recorded. Before each lift, the marked SWL is checked against the load in the cage, and the chains or slings are checked against their own rating and examination record.

Self-colour or painted finish

Most bins and pallets in the range come in self-colour, the plain steel finish, or painted, and the painted colours across the range run to black, blue, green, red, white and yellow. A site or a yard can make those colours its own code, with one colour for couplers and another for base plates, or one colour per contractor where several firms share a compound and their stock would otherwise mix. The wire mesh pallet cage comes galvanised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should stillages be kept on a construction site?

Stillages belong on hard, level standing that a forklift can reach, clear of pedestrian and vehicle routes, excavations and the area beneath crane lifts. Storage areas are best planned as part of the site layout in the construction stage safety and health plan that the PSCS develops under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013.

How should scaffold tube be loaded into a stillage?

Tube of one length goes into a stillage together, laid parallel with the ends flush so that nothing overhangs a walkway or catches a passing vehicle. The load builds evenly across the width of the stillage and no higher than its posts.

What should be checked on a stillage before it is lifted or stacked?

Each unit is checked for bent or twisted posts, cracked or broken welds, and feet that are damaged or distorted and will no longer seat on the unit below. A stillage with a damaged base or any of these faults is emptied and taken out of use until it is repaired or replaced.

How do you stop scaffold fittings going missing between jobs?

Fittings stay together when each type goes into its own bin and the bins are counted out to site and counted back in against the delivery docket. A short count then shows up at the end of the job, while the gang is still on site to look for it.

Can scaffolding stillages be used for pipe and other long materials?

Post stillages hold pipe, conduit and other long lengths in the same way as scaffold tube, stacked off the ground and sorted by size. The same frame suits plumbing and mechanical stores, utility yards and fabrication shops. Pipe of a different diameter from scaffold tube belongs on a post stillage, because tube stackers are made for scaffold tube.
