HERMEQ PP60 is a high-strength woven polypropylene geotextile manufactured from UV-stabilised flat tape (slit-film) yarns in a balanced plain weave pattern. With a biaxial tensile strength of 60 kN/m in both the machine direction (MD) and cross-machine direction (CD), the PP60 provides reliable subgrade separation and ground stabilisation for roads, hardstandings, haul routes and construction platforms.

HERMEQ PP60 is designed for civil works where a lighter separation fabric may not provide enough tensile strength, puncture resistance or dimensional stability. Its woven polypropylene structure combines separation with a meaningful reinforcement function, making it suitable for higher-load and weak-subgrade applications.

  • Balanced biaxial tensile strength: The fabric provides 60 kN/m strength in both the machine direction and cross-machine direction, reducing the risk of preferential weakness under changing load paths.
  • Low elongation under load: Elongation at break is limited to 15% or less in both directions, helping the fabric engage and distribute load before excessive subgrade deformation occurs.
  • High puncture resistance: A CBR puncture resistance of at least 3.5 kN helps the material withstand contact with angular aggregate and stone fill during installation.
  • Controlled filtration performance: Water permeability of at least 15 l/m²/s normal to the plane allows water to pass through while the 0.30–0.50mm opening size helps limit migration of fine particles.
  • Durable polypropylene construction: The fabric is rot-proof, biologically inert and resistant to chemical conditions between pH 2 and 13.
  • UV stabilised for installation exposure: The material retains more than 70% of its strength after 500 hours of exposure under the stated EN 12224 test condition.
  • Suitable for permanent burial: Polypropylene construction resists biological degradation when installed within soil and aggregate layers.
  • Wide roll format: At 5.20m wide, PP60 can cover large areas with fewer longitudinal joints than narrower rolls.

PP60 is particularly appropriate where separation alone is not enough. In haul roads, storage yards, hardstandings and construction platforms, the geotextile helps stop granular fill from being driven into weak subgrade while contributing tensile reinforcement across the formation.

It should not be treated as a complete in-plane drainage product. Water passes through the fabric, but where lateral drainage within the geotextile is required, a suitable non-woven drainage geotextile or geocomposite should be selected instead.

Suitable Applications

HERMEQ PP60 is recommended for civil-engineering and construction works that require separation, stabilisation, filtration or reinforcement.

  • Subgrade separation - PP60 forms a durable separation layer between weak subsoil and granular fill. This helps reduce contamination of the sub-base and limits the upward movement of fines into the aggregate layer.
  • Ground stabilisation - The 60 kN/m biaxial tensile strength allows the geotextile to distribute loads across weak formations. This can help reduce localised rutting and differential settlement, subject to correct project design and installation.
  • Haul roads and construction access - The fabric can be installed beneath temporary and permanent haul routes where construction traffic must operate over soft or variable ground. Any reduction in aggregate thickness must be confirmed through project-specific engineering design.
  • Working platforms - PP60 is suitable for use beneath piling platforms, crane-pad formations and temporary laydown areas where a stable granular platform is constructed over weaker subgrade.
  • Commercial yards and hardstandings - The product can be used as a separation and reinforcement layer beneath storage yards, industrial compounds, car parks and other hardstanding areas.
  • Data-centre construction - Documented uses include access roads, compound areas and equipment-pad foundations within data-centre projects.
  • Railway applications - PP60 may be installed beneath ballast where separation and filtration are required. The final system design should follow the relevant rail specification and geotechnical assessment.
  • Drainage trenches - The fabric can wrap stone-filled drainage trenches to help prevent fine soil particles from migrating into the drainage aggregate. It does not provide in-plane drainage within the fabric itself.
  • Erosion-control systems - PP60 can be used as a base separation layer beneath riprap, gabions and concrete mattresses where a woven geotextile is suitable for the engineered design.
  • Embankment reinforcement - The fabric may be used at the base of low embankments over soft ground, subject to a qualified engineer’s design and assessment.

Installation Guidance

Correct installation is essential to protect the fabric and achieve the intended separation and reinforcement performance.

  1. Prepare the subgrade — remove large stones, stumps, sharp objects and standing water.
  2. Unroll the geotextile along the direction of construction traffic.
  3. Overlap adjacent rolls by a minimum of 300mm (500mm on soft ground with CBR <2%).
  4. Pin overlaps if required using U-shaped steel pins at 1.5m centres along the overlap.
  5. Place fill material from one end, spreading forward over the geotextile. Do not drive directly on the exposed geotextile.
  6. Maintain a minimum 150mm granular cover before trafficking.
  7. Do not drag fill material across the geotextile surface — this can cause abrasion damage.

Storage & Handling

Store PP60 rolls horizontally on level ground and keep them in their original packaging until installation. Rolls should be protected from direct sunlight and should not be placed on sharp, rough or uneven surfaces that may damage the fabric.

Do not stack more than three rolls high. Rolls should be lifted and handled carefully rather than dragged over the ground.

Extended UV exposure before burial will reduce the fabric’s mechanical properties. Install and cover within 30 days of exposure. For longer exposure periods, use UV-rated geotextile or cover with a protective layer.

What is HERMEQ PP60 Woven Geotextile?

HERMEQ PP60 is a high-strength woven polypropylene geotextile used for subgrade separation, stabilisation, filtration and reinforcement. It has a biaxial tensile strength of 60 kN/m in both directions and is supplied in a 5.20m × 100m roll.

What is PP60 geotextile used for?

PP60 is used beneath roads, haul routes, hardstandings, working platforms, car parks, railway ballast and embankments. It separates soil from granular fill while adding tensile reinforcement across weak or variable ground.

What does 60 kN/m biaxial tensile strength mean?

It means the fabric provides a tensile strength of 60 kilonewtons per metre in both the machine direction and cross-machine direction. Equal strength in both directions helps the geotextile respond to loads acting across the formation rather than primarily along one axis.

Is PP60 suitable for haul roads and HGV traffic?

Yes. PP60 is documented for haul-road construction and demanding trafficked areas, including commercial yards. The full pavement or platform build-up must still be designed for the expected traffic, subgrade strength and aggregate depth.

Can PP60 be installed over weak or soft ground?

Yes. PP60 is intended for weak-subgrade separation and stabilisation applications. Use a 500mm overlap on subgrades with a CBR of 1–3%. Very soft or saturated ground below 1% CBR may require sewn or welded seams and project-specific advice.

Can vehicles drive directly on exposed PP60?

No. Vehicles and construction plant should not drive directly on exposed PP60. Install a minimum 150mm granular cover before trafficking, unless the engineered design requires a greater depth.

Is PP60 suitable for drainage applications?

PP60 allows water to pass through the fabric normal to its plane and can be used to wrap stone-filled drainage trenches. It does not provide water flow within the plane of the fabric, so a dedicated drainage geotextile or geocomposite may be more suitable where lateral drainage is required.
